Barcelona City Council has incorporated compliance with language regulations into the inspections carried out at businesses on La Rambla.

The inspections aim to check that businesses comply with the requirements regarding the use of Catalan in information provided to consumers, including signs, commercial documentation and other forms of customer service.

Until now, this type of non-compliance had not been subject to municipal fines during these inspections. Under the new approach, businesses that fail to comply with the regulations could face fines of up to €10,000, depending on the nature of the infringement.
